Notice to Individuals Granted Immigration Benefits by an Immigration Judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals

Alert Type info

Alert: USCIS Announces Updates to the Post-Order Instructions for Individuals Granted Relief or Protection from Removal by Immigration Court

We are updating the instructions for people who were granted relief or protection from removal by an immigration judge or by the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA). In most cases, we will create and mail your Permanent Residence Card (also known as a Green Card) or documentation of asylum to you after the decision by an immigration judge or the BIA granting you lawful permanent resident status or asylum becomes final. We typically can provide this documentation without any additional action on your part, such as the need to appear in-person at a field office. Please wait at least 45 days after your order from the immigration judge or BIA becomes final before you contact the USCIS Contact Center, which should give us enough time to process and mail your documentation to the address you provided to the court. If you have moved since a final decision was made by an immigration judge or the BIA on your case, please refer to the detailed information about how to change an address on the How to Change Your Address page.

For more information, please see Notice to Individuals Granted Immigration Benefits by Immigration Judge or Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA).

You may call the USCIS Contact Center if:

  • You were granted Lawful Permanent Resident status or asylum during proceedings before an Immigration Judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA);
  • 45 days have passed since the date your decision became administratively final; and
  • You have not yet received your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) or documentation of asylum (Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record).

The Contact Center’s telephone number is 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833). You may also request an appointment by visiting myUSCIS - Schedule an Appointment.

Be ready to provide a copy of the final order you received from the Immigration Judge or the BIA and documents establishing your identity (passport, driver’s license, USCIS- issued Employment Authorization Document, etc.).  Please see the Post-Order Instructions for Individuals Granted Relief or Protection from Removal by an Immigration Judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals for more information.

If you have been granted Lawful Permanent Resident or Asylum status during proceedings before an Immigration Judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) and you have not yet received documentation of your status, please schedule an appointment with your local USCIS office to get that documentation. You should be prepared to bring with you a copy of the final order you received from the Immigration Judge or the BIA and documents establishing your identity (passport, driver’s license, USCIS issued employment authorization document, etc.).

Inquiries from Lawful Permanent Residents Regarding Status Documentation:

If you have attended all scheduled USCIS appointments for documentation and complied with all USCIS instructions, including biometrics collection, but you have not yet received your Green Card or evidence of asylee status, you may call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 TTY 800-767-1833. You may also request an appointment by visiting myUSCIS - Schedule an Appointment.

When you make an inquiry, you must provide:

  • Your name;

  • Your A- Number;

  • Your date of birth;

  • Your current address;

  • The date of your order from the Immigration Judge or the BIA;

  • The specific type of relief or protection granted that made you a lawful permanent resident (for example, adjustment of status or, cancellation of removal);

  • Whether your order is final (if you or your representative know);

  • The date of your application support center appointment; and

  • Any other relevant information about your request for documentation.

Without this information, we may not be able to respond fully to your inquiry.
